The West Highland Way is one of Scotland's most popular walking holidays. Starting on the outskirts of Glasgow, the West Highland Way passes along Loch Lomond's shores through to its first National Park. Then northward across the Highlands to the foot of Scotland's highest mountain, Ben Nevis.
This self guided walking holiday on the West Highland Way is 95 miles long if you walk the complete path. The most popular direction is south to north. The gentle lowland gradients will help you get into your stride before approaching the more challenging northern section.
Some of the walking is very straightforward along tracks, paths and old military roads. Some sections can be rough underfoot, boggy and exposed.
The best time to take a walking holiday on the West Highland Way is May / June or Sept / early October. Insect repellent may be required in the summer months
The West Highland Way follows almost the entire length of the eastern shore of Loch Lomond. Some 20 miles of arguably the most breath taking scenery. The Loch supports a rich diversity of wildlife, plants, insects and birds. 20 species of fish can be found here.
Your walking holiday along the West Highland Way runs through three main types of habitat. River valley, woodland and moorland. From Milngavie in the south through Drymen, Crianlarich and Fort William in the north.
In the river valley you will see birds such as the oyster-catcher, and wild flowers such as the common spotted orchid.
In the woodland, carpeted in bluebells, primroses and wood anemones you are likely to spot butterflies, dragonflies and woodpeckers. Roe Deer frequent the woodland if you are quiet you may see them !
The moorlands are covered in heather. This is where you are most likely to see the birds of prey soaring in the skies. A diverse and beautiful walking holiday that should be planned with enough time to enjoy the amazing scenery.

I did this walk alone in September and met many friendly and interesting people from all over Europe also doing the West Highland Way. The scenery is just amazing and is a welcome tonic for anybody habitually sat in front of a computer screen at work. All the baggage transfer and accommodation arrangements were superbly organised by The Walking Holiday Company, many thanks to you. Philip Howarth
