Coronavirus (COVID-19) – Frequently Asked Questions - last update 19 August 2020

Here at Great British Walks our priority will always be the safety and well-being of our customers, service providers and staff. We understand the continuing outbreak of Coronavirus (Covid-19) will be on everyone’s minds, and we are here to offer help & advice.

We have put together some additional temporary T & C’s for the duration of the outbreak, along with some options for our customers. We also offer some answers to frequently asked questions, and reserve the right to make changes as appropriate.

Q.  How might Coronavirus affect my trip?

At this time restrictions within the UK are being steadily eased, however local areas are occasionally needing to take measures to stop any increase in people catching the virus.  Guidance from the FCO (Foreign & Commonwealth Office) changes, often on a daily basis, as countries fall into quarantine situations. Please be mindful of checking your information regularly.

The FCO has 3 levels of travel advisory warning;

  1. No travel restrictions

  2. Advise against all but essential travel (to a specific region or country)

  3. Advise against all travel (to a specific region or country)

If you are travelling from abroad to the UK, you should of course monitor advice given by your own authorities and airlines.  Please be mindful of the latest quarantine rules applied by either the UK or your own Country.

Q.  Will my holiday go ahead?

We are currently contacting all customers who's holidays are due to start in early September / October 2020.  We are advising those clients of their options.  

The situation is remains fluid, and we will keep our clients advised in a chronological order.  Should you wish to email us, that is also fine. we will do our best to respond as quickly as possible at this challenging time.

Q.  Travel restrictions have changed, what are my options?

This will depend upon your holiday start date.  At this point in time we are not able to offer any holidays through August & September.   Postponement or cancellation is currently being offered to customers who are due to start in the next 2 months.  We will continue to monitor the situation for customers who's holidays are August / September onward.  Great British Walks really appreciate the continued support of our customers, and the following temporary additional T & C’s will be in place for the duration of the outbreak. Q.  If I choose to cancel my holiday?

Please email the office at  info@great-british-walks.com stating your name and booking number, and we can supply you with the information you require.  Please do not try to telephone, as the office is closed at present. Your emails will be answered as quickly as possible from a remote working office.

Q.  Can I postpone my holiday?

Yes.  Under normal circumstances we do not offer postponement of holidays. We have made this temporary change for our customers benefit to help provide some leeway during this unprecedented situation. As there is no further financial commitment necessary until your balance is due (8 weeks/ 56 days before your start date), we would suggest you wait till nearer the time, this will allow you to make a decision based on more up to date information.

If you would like to postpone your holiday:

Holidays with start dates of 4 weeks or more away can be postponed.  Please email the office at  info@great-british-walks.com for further instruction.

Please do not try to telephone, as the office is closed at present. Your emails will be answered as quickly as possible from a remote working office.

Postponed holidays will be valid till end 2021.

All previous payments made for your original holiday will be transferred to the new booking, should the booking remain the same.

Previous deals/ offers cannot be used.

Your new holiday may be subject to any price increase.

Q.  Can I delay payment for my holiday?

At this point we are not taking any Balance Payments.  We shall continue to monitor the situation and advise clients accordingly, in chronological order.

Should you have any underlying health issues, we recommend you discuss your travel plans with your doctor in good time. Holiday insurance is essential, and your responsibility. When arranging your insurance, we advise you check your insurance policy thoroughly and make sure it covers everything you require. The above terms and conditions are temporary, and we reserve the right to change/remove them as the situation with Covid-19 changes.

1. How to Book

We are happy to accept your booking online at www.great-british-walks.com, by post to Great British Walks Limited, Singleton Court Business Park, Wonastow Road, Monmouth, NP25 5JA, or telephone our offices on + 44 (0) 1600 713008. We are able to accept Deposit and Balance payments on our secure online payment page, by debit / credit card, or Paypal invoice. You may send a sterling cheque made payable to 'GREAT BRITISH WALKS LIMITED', which must be drawn on a UK bank account. Upon receipt of your Deposit of £200 per person your Holiday reservations will be made. The deposit is non-refundable.

Should you request upgraded accommodation and non-refundable deposits are required by those accommodations, you will be asked to pay for these at the time of securing those rooms.

Your Holiday balance will be due 8 weeks (56 days) prior to the start date of your walking holiday. If you book your holiday within 8 weeks (56 days) of the ‘start date’, your full balance will be payable at that time. If payment is not received as above, we reserve the right to treat your booking as cancelled and your deposit/s would be forfeited. Your holiday pack will be sent to you approximately 4 weeks before the start of your holiday. Allow for extra delivery time on Overseas packs. Please note that all correspondence for this booking will be made through the Lead Name only. Should you wish to keep your party up to date it is your responsibility to forward correspondence. 1a. Alterations by You

We shall book your holiday in accordance with your requested dates. If you need to change any details of your booking, we will do our best to help. If a change you have requested is made we will charge an ‘Amendment Fee’. The fee will be £50 per person for those wishing to change/amend their booking more than 56 days prior to departure. Alterations after this date will be treated as a cancellation and re-booking, and the charges in Paragraph 2 will apply. An additional charge may be levied if we are unable to recover costs already incurred (for example - prepaid accommodation deposits). Any alterations must be made by the Lead Name on the Booking Form.

1b. Alterations by Great British Walks Limited.

On rare occasions we may have to make a change to your booking. for example, to a different accommodation, or luggage transfer service. This is normally when something has occurred which is out of our control. We must therefore reserve the right to change the itinerary / accommodation where circumstances dictate. We shall advise the Lead Name of these amendments before your start date.

2. If you need to Cancel your holiday.

Should you need to cancel your holiday, then you must advise us as soon as possible. Your cancellation will need to be confirmed in writing, and should be made by the Lead name on the booking form. Our ‘Cancellation Fees’ will apply as follows;-

  • 56 days or more before your start date = deposit only
  • 29 to 55 days before your start date = 50%
  • 8 to 28 days before your start date = 90%
  • Less than 8 days, or whilst the holiday is in progress = 100%

In addition to these charges, extra charges may need to be added if a member(s) of a group booking cancel. We are obliged to implement these cancellation fees without exception. We therefore strongly advise you to take out adequate travel insurance to cover you against cancellation.

3. Your Responsibilities

It is your responsibility to ensure that you have a reasonable level of health / fitness, adequate experience, suitable clothes/equipment and remain aware of risks involved in a walking holiday. Although Great British Walks Limited can assure you that with sensible precaution your holiday is as safe as possible you must accept that the sole responsibility for your personal safety remains with you. In the interest of safety you must undertake to follow the advice in the guide book or route notes as well as that provided by anybody on our behalf, heed any warning or advisory notices you may encounter on your walk, follow the Country Code and act sensibly and prudently at all times. You are responsible for your own travel arrangements to the start point and from the finish point of you holiday. Please read through our booking conditions carefully. The Lead Name person making the booking accepts the terms of these booking conditions on behalf of everyone named on the booking form.

4. Insurance

We strongly recommend you take out adequate insurance to cover you against cancellation, illness, personal accident and loss or damage to possessions. Great British Walks Limited or its associates cannot accept responsibility for any loss, damage, illness, injury or consequences outside of their control.

5. The Countryside Code

The Country Code is a standard set of guidelines for members of the public, to ensure respect and enjoyment in the countryside. The five points of the Countryside Code are: Be safe, plan ahead and follow any signs. Take maps/guidebooks. You can download a copy of the Countryside code here.

6. Coastal Path Safety

As well as following the Countryside Code, when you are walking the Coast Path or accessing beaches and coastal beauty spots it's important you stay safe. You can download our coastal path safety guide here.

7. Great British Walks Limited

We believe that the details on the web site to be correct at the time of publication. All arrangements made on behalf of clients are made in good faith. We reserve the right to alter the information, prices and itineraries on the website and these will be advised at the time of booking.

8. Force majeure

We regret we cannot accept any liability or pay any compensation where the performance or prompt performance of our contractual obligations is prevented or affected by, or you otherwise suffer any damage or loss as a result of force majeure.   Force majeure means any event which we, or the supplier of the service(s) in question, could not, even with all due care, foresee or avoid.   Such events include war or threat of war, riots, civil strife, terrorist activities, industrial disputes, fire, natural or nuclear disasters, adverse weather conditions and all similar events outside our control.

9. Luggage transfers

It is your responsibility to ensure that your bags are packed safely. Please do not pack fragile / valuable items, such as phones, cameras, computers. Also do not pack bottles of wine which can easily break and damage not only yours but other walkers bags and contents. Bags should weigh no more than 15kg. Baggage handling operatives may refuse to handle heavier bags, or indeed make additional charges. Great British Walks Limited does not accept any liability for loss or damage to items of luggage or its contents during said transfers.

10. Holiday Packs

One Holiday Pack will be issued per 2 walkers. The pack will contain the relevant Guide Book and Map for your walk. A holiday booklet describing your holiday, accommodation details, directions to your accommodation, taxi contacts, luggage transfer details, advice on packed lunches, advice on evening meals, useful route information, general information, checklist for walkers, physical preparation advice, mobile phone hire details, emergency contact details. Your holiday pack will also contain luggage labels, future walks list, holiday questionnaire, photo competition details, any local interest leaflets or additional literature we may have available to include. Should your group require extra Packs, Guide Books or Maps, these are available to purchase after checkout and via your account page.

11. Acceptance of our Terms and Conditions.

Your booking is accepted on the basis of the above conditions which are governed by English Law and the jurisdiction of the English/Welsh Courts. Please do not ask us to change them after booking.

12. Gift Vouchers Terms and Conditions.

Your booking is accepted on the basis of the above conditions which are governed by English Law and the jurisdiction of the English/Welsh Courts. Please do not ask us to change them after booking.

Terms & Conditions are stated on the reverse of Gift Vouchers. Gift Vouchers cannot be exchanged for cash. No change can be given. 

GV1. Duration

Great British Walks Limited 'Gift Vouchers' are valid for 2 years from the date of purchase, and can be redeemed against a holiday listed on our web site. They can also be used as part payment toward a more expensive holiday.

GV2. Delivery

The vouchers can be sent to the purchaser by email as a PDF or they can posted by 1st Class post on receipt of order. We will be adding e-Gift Vouchers to the online shopping environment by Summer 2019.

GV3. Refunds

Great British Walks Limited complies with the Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations 2013 which states that your right to cancel an order starts the moment you place your order and doesn’t end until fourteen (14) working days from the day after you receive your gift vouchers. 

To claim a refund, the purchaser will be required to return the voucher/s to Great British Walks Limited, Singleton Court Business Park, Monmouth, NP25 5JA.

GV4. Other terms

On booking a holiday with Great British Walks Limited the Terms and Conditions shown on this page will apply where payment is made by voucher.
